I am from Daytona Beach so I took the Daytona Beach News Journal and looked for possible opportunities.
1) Transgender high school student sues Volusia Schools
-This article is about a transgender boy suing my old school district for not letting him use the boys bathroom and locker room.
-This opportunity is more to help people who are going through similar situations. One of the biggest news topics and political questions is behind transgender rights, so what can be done to help this community and possibly create a business out of it. The need here is education for school faculty and staff. A group could offer a service where they have a "learning session" with the teachers where they ask and answer tough questions that teachers are afraid to ask other places.

2) Rolex's modern-day surge
- The main thing people know about Daytona is it's beaches and the Speedway. People who live in Daytona hate race week because you can't leave your house because the traffic is so bad and it is not worth it.
- The problem here is how to better handle race traffic to make it so locals can still get to where they need to go. This would benefit locals and visitors, because both would be stuck in less traffic.

3) Annual homeless count underway
- This article, with its messed up title and all, is about Volusia and Flagler county trying to count exactly how many homeless people there are in the counties. Could have named the article Annual count of homeless PEOPLE underway, but anyways.
- The opportunity here is, and one I think that the survey met well, is providing an incentive for homeless people to take this survey.

4) Felon's rights proposal goes on November ballot
-This article is about how Rick Scott is being Rick Scott and has done very little to help anyone, in this case felons. Felons can go in front of a board, including Rick Scott, and ask for their right to vote back. Scott has allowed a couple of hundred in his first term to get their rights back, while Charlie Crist allowed 1500 in his terms (not exact numbers but I just watched something about it).
-The opportunity here is for lawyers. Once this bill is passed by the good people of Florida, there will be a high high high high high demand for all the felons that Rick Scott has denied to get their rights back and I am sure there will be push back from the State so lawyers and other representatives will be needed to help these people get their voting rights back.

5) All DeLand police officers using body cameras
-This article is about, you guessed it, Deland police officers using body cameras.
-The opportunity here was actually prior to the cameras, which was how to proof when a cop is doing something right and when they are doing something wrong. Body cameras were able to plug that opportunity and will now leave police officers safe to false accusations, and citizens safe to possible mistakes made by police. Both parties win!

Hey Edson, i really like two of your particular local opportunities. First, the idea of having a learning session for teachers on how to handle sensitive issues such as being transgender, etc. would be extremely valuable. All too often we hear of teachers or faculty mishandling cases like these because of their own views or lack of education on the subject. Additionally, I like the idea of an annual homeless count. I'm sure it already has been done in many cities already, but maybe there could be a national database where you could see estimates in every city. I think people buying a home or looking for certain areas might find info like this invaluable.
ReplyDeleteI love that you focused entirely on your hometown. I came from such a small town that I couldn't find five recent articles all from my town. I also like the articles you chose to focus on. Number 4, about Rick Scott, is very interesting! You did a great job summarizing the article and explaining the problem and opportunity here.
ReplyDeleteI find your opportunity for felons to have their right to vote returned very interesting, not just for the possible precedent in the State of Florida, but potentially across the nation. This opportunity would most likely provide a plethora of differing opinions regarding not only the right to vote, but which felony charges are deserving of their right returned. I agree it is a large opportunity for lawyers.
