For this exercise, I'd like you to do the following:
1) An app for when you want to go out with friends. "Drinking Buddies"
2) When college students go out, we hate having to bring an ID, a credit card, cash, our phone, a second form of ID and much more. As a guy, I hate when girls ask me to cary their stuff, so this is an opportunity to end guys having to carry girls things when we go out. This app would also tell you what the cover is, the wait time, how busy it is, any specials the venue is having, and could possibly even be linked to Uber and have scheduled rides for you and friends.
- The who: College Students in the US (anyone who goes out to bars or clubs)
- The what: When people go out they have to bring a lot of things with them which can result in theft, losing things, and just plain annoyance
- The why: We need several items when going out to club or bars
3) This is your 'hypothesis' about the opportunity. It is a statement of your belief related to an opportunity. I'd like you to test the boundaries of the hypothesis by pushing and prodding each of the three elements. That means:
- Testing the who: I think college students have more of a need for something like this in college towns, but I am sure that adults and non-college students that go out would enjoy something to help with this.
- Testing the what: I think a boundary to consider is will clubs and bars be on board with this, so the question is, is it all bars and club, or just some?
- Testing the why: I think this benefits the consumer more than the bars and clubs. People who hate carrying so many things when going on would enjoy this app because they wouldn't have to do it anymore. The bars and clubs, although not as benefitted, would enjoy this because they could see the consumers ID and second form of ID all on one app that has an ID and other info pre-approved. This would eliminate fake id's a little more.
4) After interviewing people, I found that this is actually a big opportunity for something like this in college towns. I interviewed 4 college students, 2 girls and 2 guys, 2 who go out often and 2 who go out rarely. I also interviewed a 28 year old who is graduated from college and goes out sometimes with friends. The main benefit that the people I interviewed saw from this was the fact that they wouldn't have to carry all of their stuff around. This app would have your credit card, your ID, your second form of ID, and any other info you need when going on. This would make it so you can't lose your credit card, ID or wallet when you go out, it is all on your phone.
The guy and girl who went out often also enjoyed knowing what places were having what deal and how much it was to get in. When I go out, I hate waiting in line and then getting to the door and finding out it is expensive to get in. By knowing how long the line is, the deals being offered, and how busy it is, you can spend more time partying and less time waiting in line to pay an absurd cover.
The guy and girl who do not go out often, said they would enjoy this app because they do not like going out because they are afraid of losing things. Since all the info you will need to get into anywhere will be on this app, there is no fear of losing your wallet or ID anymore.
The 28 year old woman I interviewed also enjoyed knowing what was busy and what wasn't. When she goes out, she isn't always looking for a crazy party scene, but sometimes a calm place to get drinks with friends. Knowing what is busy and what is not you can take your coworkers to a certain place, your ladies to another place, and your date to another place just by knowing what the deals are and how busy it is.
5) One thing not discussed yet is the amount of cooperation this would take from the bars and clubs to be a success. How I would get around this sell the bars and clubs on their benefit of being a supporter of this app. Less ability for people to use fake ID's, easier and faster to ring people up when they buy drinks, and fewer thefts of ID's and wallets. This opportunity is one for the consumer, but I think the bars and clubs can also benefit from something like this in the long run.
Hey man,
ReplyDeleteYour opportunity belief was extremely interesting to read about! I can definitely relate, I went to a nightclub a couple weeks ago and the cover fee was more than what I expected, PLUS when I got there, I had to wait over an hour in line to go in. Never again. This would eliminate many of the issues that arise when going out. I also don't enjoy holding my girlfriend's wallet, so that would help alleviate me from holding extra cargo!
Hey man, I think the idea is good, but there a few problems. First, I think there is an issue on whether this is an actual unmet need. I believe most people who go out are mostly going to get fairly intoxicated and i don't see them going on app to browse different bar and club selections. Also, I think people have set places in their minds that they like, and they do not deviate. I also do not see how this app would cause you to hold less things. Regardless of the info you are providing, people are still going to have to bring their ID, money for food, etc. I like where your thought processes are at, but I think they need to be a little more refined.
ReplyDeleteHi Edson. I think this is a good idea, as it would benefit a lot of people, especially within a college town. I think the biggest challenge you could face with this though would be in uploading people's ID onto the app. Bars would really want to make sure that it does not make fake id easier, as it would be harder to tell if an ID is fake or not over an app. However, if you could figure out a way to overcome this obstacle I think it would be a great new app!
